Kieryn Marcellus

Personal Trainer

Certifications:

  • Bachelor of Science in Kinesiology
  • Certified Personal Trainer with the Canadian Society for Exercise Physiology

History:

Growing up, I never played many sports. In my teenage years, I competed in Rugby and Short-Track sprinting. In recent years, I’ve competed and coached powerlifting when I was able to fit it into my academic schedule.

I chose to pursue a Bachelor of Science in Kinesiology at the University of Lethbridge with the aim of working with athletes. When I pursued a personal training position under their co-operative education program, it became apparent to me that I can train ANYONE like an athlete.

In 2015, I accepted a position as the Strength and Conditioning Intern for Canada’s National Men’s Rugby 7’s program where I worked directly under the supervision of international coaches and had the opportunity to coach elite athletes.

Trainee Type:

My favorite type of clients are those individuals who are motivated to succeed and make the changes necessary to reach their goals. I have the ability to work with a variety of clients with goals ranging from general health and wellness, weight loss, post-rehabilitation, strength and conditioning as well as powerlifters.

Training Philosophy:

It’s important to acknowledge that goal attainment requires changes to your lifestyle. Trying to make too many of these changes, or too much of a change, will sabotage most people. Thus, I believe that a series of 1% improvements over time are BEST suited to help you succeed with your fitness endeavors.

My programming style tends to be aggressive but not excessive. I definitely want to have you ride the strugglebus, but not become an executive life-time member. Through careful assessment of your mobility and personal ability, I aim to create a program for you that results in you constantly striving to becoming better than you were last week.

Favourite Exercise:

The deadlift is an art. With various stances (Conventional, Semi-Semi Sumo and Jefferson), implements (Barbells, Trap Bars, kettlebells, landmines) and variations (Bilateral, Unilateral, Pause, Double Pause, Banded, Elevator AND MORE) the possibilities to pick things up from the ground are endless. Finding which one is best suited to you and which variation will help you hate your life…. I mean make you a better deadlifter… is probably my favorite thing when I first meet a client.

Testimonial:

After incurring a shoulder injury, I was unable to do push-ups or hang from a pull-up bar. Traditional physiotherapy only got be back to being able to live my life pain free however I was still unable to participate in sport. I was told that I’d never be able to do any shoulder intensive exercise including running ever again.

After working with Kieryn and following his program, I now participate in rock climbing, long distance swimming, weight training, and long distance running. My quality of life has improved 10 fold and I wouldn’t have been able to participate in the sports I do today without the support and help from Kieryn Marcellus.
